Have you ever met a person who makes you love books more because they love them so much? Well, I can say I am very lucky and know many! But my friend Mr. Schu takes book love to a whole new level! I absolutely adore him for many reasons….but his passion and excitement for books makes me enjoy books even more!
So for Mr. Schu’s birthday I am going to share the top five books that remind me of…. Mr. Schu! All five books have a special place in my heart. I love them all….but they are special to me because John Schu loves them too. I know it will make his birthday if you read even one of these amazing books- but you really should read all five! You will love them as much as we do….I promise!
1. The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
If you know Mr. Schu….you know he adores this book and that he was also able to meet the real Ivan before he passed away. Sharing Ivan with my second graders as a read-aloud was powerful. But it was made even more meaningful when I was able to share John’s blog posts and experience meeting Ivan with my class.
2. Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo
I read this book and loved it in 2013! Little did I know how much John Schu loved Flora and Ulysses too! It was such a joy watching this book win the Newbery award and then having discussions with John on Twitter about this funny, beautiful book.
3. Love That Dog by Sharon Creech
Believe it or not I hadn’t read any of Sharon Creech’s books until I heard Mr. Schu rave about Love That Dog on Facebook! Then I fell head over heals in love with this book and every Sharon Creech book I read after that! She is one of my all time favorite authors….all thanks to Mr. Schu!
4. We Are In A Book by Mo Willems
Shock #2! I also hadn’t read any of Mo Willems’ books until I heard about We Are In A Book from….you guessed it…Mr. Schu! Now my second grade students and my son Sam love Mo Willem’s books too! One of my favorite Skype events of the year is when Mr. Schu’s class and my class take turns reading We Are In A Book together! Pure Fun and Laughter!
5. The Gentleman Bug by Julian Hector
I think this one is obvious! Mr. Schu is the Gentleman Bug! You must check out this sweet book about a bug that loves books and falls for another book lover. Such a cute book! I love sharing this book with my students at the beginning of the school year.
So what books are special to you because of Mr. Schu?! Please let him know on his Twitter page @mrschureads and make sure to wish him a Happy Birthday! Use the hashtag #mrschubday!
Happy Birthday Mr. Schu! I am so thankful for you, your generous spirit and your love of books!
