School’s First Day of School by Adam Rex and illustrated by Christian Robinson is a new favorite picture book to read the first day of school! Who can resist that smiling school?
How to Get Your Teacher Ready by Jean Reagan and illustrated by Lee Wildish is a great book to show what would happen if students were in charge of making sure the teacher knew what to do in the classroom!
Ralph Tells a Story by Abby Hanlon is a great first story to share for writer’s workshop. This all about Ralph’s struggle to write a story and how he finally comes up with a solution to his writing problem. Students will love this book!
The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers is the perfect read aloud to get students excited about reading! I love reading it in the library the first week of school. It would also make a great read aloud to kick of reader’s workshop!
Do Unto Otters by Laurie Keller is a fabulous and funny book about being kind and having manners. This would be a great book to share for the first class meeting.
My New Teacher and Me by Al Yankovic and illustrations by Wes Hargis is a great mentor text for storytelling and personal narratives.
Bear’s Big Day by Salina Yoon is a great book to share the first day of school with younger students. I love the illustrations in this book. Adorable!
A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech with illustrations by Harry Bliss is a great read aloud to talk about what makes a fine school for your students!
You’re Wearing THAT to School?! by Lynn Plourde and illustrations by Sue Cornelison is a great first day of school book about the importance of being yourself.
Dog Days of School by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrations by Brian Biggs is a hilarious story about a boy that wishes he was a dog….and what happens when his wish comes true!
